A 54-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of his daughter.
The man appeared in
the Madadeni Regional Court in South Africa on Thursday after he was convicted of raping the now 9-year-old girl, police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed in a statement.
The Newcastle Family Violence and Child Protection Unit investigated the man after the matter was reported to the police last year.
"The mother of the victim realised that her child was abused by her father since she was 7-years-old," Zwane said.
Police have welcomed the "hefty sentence", he added, as this will "serve as a strong message to would-be rapists".
